✨ Celebrating Black History Month! 🌟
Robert "Bob" Hicks (February 20, 1929 – April 13, 2010) was a prominent leader in Bogalusa, Louisiana, during the Civil Rights Movement, whose activism helped put an end to segregation and discriminatory practices in education, housing, employment, public accommodations, and healthcare. Best known for his leading role in founding the Bogalusa chapter of The Deacons for Defense and Justice, an armed African-American self-defense group, Hicks led daily protests on the streets of Jim Crow-era Bogalusa.
✨ Celebrating Black History Month! 🌟
A. Z. Young (October 31, 1921 – December 1, 1993) was an African-American civil rights and organized labor activist. In 1972, he became the first black to head a state agency in Louisiana. Young was born in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Young founded and directed the Bogalusa Voters League, which, on August 19, 1967, led a massive march from Bogalusa to Baton Rouge, a distance of ninety-five miles, and culminated in an emotional rally on the steps of the state capitol.
